Diagnosis and Assessment

Before determining the best treatment options to help deal with any form of incontinence you will undergo a basic diagnostic and clinical evaluation.

This will include:

  • Clinical history
  • Lifestyle factor evaluation
  • Incontinence Impact Questionnaires
  • Clinical examination

You will be offered Conservative Treatment in the first instance in order to try and strengthen the natural support mechanisms of the bladder and urethra. If there is a significant structural problem that may be contributing to your incontinence then Reconstructive Surgery may be considered.

If incontinence surgery is contemplated then at least two investigations will be performed prior to any decision to operate:

  • Urodynamic testing - this is best thought of as a "stress test" for your bladder where it is subjected to a full physiological assessment
  • Pelvic ultrasound - to ensure that there are no other factors such as tumours or cysts pressing on the bladder and to also exclude undiagnosed prolapse of the uterus or small bowel

Other more advanced investigations may be necessary if your problems are more extensive and involve complex issues. These include:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanning (MRI)
  • Urological consultation
  • Advanced Urodynamics with flouroscopy
  • Colorectal assessment
  • Anorectal physiological studies
  • Endoanal ultrasound

All of these services are available at Sydney Adventist Hospital or in association with our affiliated specialists at the Centre for Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery.
