Accessa™
Accessa™ is a new para urethral neuromodulation device that has been developed to treat pelvic dysfunction. It avoids the need to implant a stimulation lead into the spinal canal but instead acts locally adjacent to the bladder neck.
Dr Farnsworth is currently undertaking research into this device as part of a multicentre international trial. This research is studying the efficacy of peripheral neuromodulation (Accessa) in treatment of Urgency Incontinence due to an overactive bladder.
After using a "test" lead to see if the device works for 2 or 3 days the Accessa can be implanted under the skin and provide long term symptom relief. After about 5 years it is expected that the battery on the device will need replacement.
The Research involves undergoing a test implantation of an Accessa™ Device which would be provided by the manufacturer, American Medical Systems Pty Ltd. The current research project is looking at Accessa™ as a treatment for overactive bladder and urge incontinence.
